Many Native peoples see the hummingbird as a sacred symbol of getting to the heart of a matter and clarifying it just as the tiny hummingbird so quickly gets to the nectar deep in the heart of a flower.

Hummers are the only birds that can fly backwards,teaching us that we can look back at our past, but not dwell there, and continue to go forward.

According to the laws of physics, a hummingbird shouldn't be able to fly at all, so it has become a symbol for accomplishing that which seems impossible. Its ability to hover while drinking nectar is a lesson for us to savor each moment of our lives, while appreciating its sweetness.
